Every collection eventually reaches a point where it begins telling its own story. That is exactly what has happened with my Afrofuturism Black Celestial Royalty Collection.

When I first began creating these works, I wasn’t interested in recreating history. I wanted to imagine a mythology that never had the opportunity to exist—a universe where Black kings, queens, guardians, angels, fae, and divine beings occupy the center of fantasy rather than the margins.

These newest additions continue that journey.

Each piece explores a different aspect of power. Not power through conquest, but power through wisdom, transformation, mystery, and presence. Every throne represents earned authority. Every crown tells a story. Every pair of wings symbolizes freedom, protection, and transcendence.

These figures are not waiting to be rescued. They are the rulers.

Some guard forgotten kingdoms hidden beyond the stars. Others walk between dimensions carrying sacred fire, ancient knowledge, or the balance between light and darkness. Some preside over enchanted forests where nature itself recognizes their sovereignty. Others sit quietly within forgotten temples where civilizations have faded but their legacy remains eternal.

Although each artwork stands on its own, together they form a larger Afrofuturism mythology—one that blends Afrofuturism, fantasy, folklore, celestial symbolism, sacred geometry, and imaginative world building into a universe where Black excellence is timeless, magical, and legendary.

These works are invitations rather than illustrations. They encourage us to imagine futures inspired by forgotten histories and legends that were never written. That is where Afrofuturism fantasy becomes powerful. Not because it escapes reality—but because it allows us to envision realities we have never been shown.

About the Black Celestial Royalty Collection

The Black Celestial Royalty Collection is an original fantasy art series by artist Iain Smillie that celebrates dignity, imagination, mythology, and the limitless possibilities of Black representation within fantasy art.
